The Thames Championship, fished by 124 anglers between Kelmscott and Newbridge last Sunday, was won by Robin Cave (Fox Match Isis Oxford) with a bag of big chub, writes Andy Webber.

Sat on peg 2 at Newbridge, Robin fished the feeder with chopped worm to catch seven chub, the best going 5lb, for a winning weight of 32.2.0.

Using similar tactics down at Radcot, Mark Kimber (Colmic Talisman) also got amongst the chub and gave the scalesman 25.12.0 to weigh for second place.

Tony Avery (Alcester Sports) was third with 22.4.0 of chub taken from Rushey, while Alcester also took the team title.

The final match in the Carp League 2008 was fished by 17 on a ‘below par’ Pans Lake at Panshill.

Derek Hammond (BGS Garbolino) came out on top with a bag of carp going 107.8.0, all his fish coming from down the edge on corn.

Fishing next to him was Ivan Graham, who fished tight over with maggot and banked 80.0.0 of carp for second spot.

Also fishing tight over but using caster fished shallow, was Steve Page, who weighed in 72.10.0 for third.

Final points: R Guppy (RS Baits) 16, M Ryman (Predator) 17, N Dean (Maggots End) 17 (on weight), S Johnson (Maggots End).

There was a good turn-out of 20 for Kinloch AC's match at Drayton Reservoir, and the closer you were to the yachting station the better it was.

With a net of carp weighing 94.14.0, Carl Mills was the clear winner, fishing the method with either pellet or sweetcorn on the hook.

Also on the method and using sweetcorn or maggot, Dennis Harris was second with 74.4.0, and third with 66.14.0 of carp was Bill Bryant.

Beehive AC kicked off their Winter League series in glorious sunshine at Rye Hill, where the 15 members found the fish a bit shy.

Fifteen-year-old Robert Bennett won his very first match with 41.10.0 of carp taken from the margins on maggot.

Kevin Jeacock had to settle for second place with 41.6.0, 12 carp to the pellet waggler, followed by Andy Crabb with four big carp worth 33.0.0.

Oxford Bus AC were on the Cherwell where ten anglers fished their match on the school waters.

Mark Heath found 10.11.0, made up of bleak and a 2.6.0 perch, caught on the pole midstream with either maggot or worm.

Also on the pole with punch and worm, Anthony Tompkins caught small roach and perch for a second-placed 3.1.0, while third was Tony Prescott with 2.14.0 of small perch and roach on the feeder.

The Thames was flowing strongly at Radley, where 15 Masons anglers fished their ninth-round points match upstream of the boathouse.

Jason Smith managed to entice a few roach to 1.4.0 on the feeder with maggot and caster for a winning 9.13.0.

Gary Pether was second, using the pole and maggot to catch roach and perch for 7.6.0, closely followed by Yan Stankowski with 7.5.0 on stick and maggot.

Cuddesdon Mill VAA were on the Thame at Cuddesdon for their Brian Coles Cup.

It turned out to be hard work for the 13 anglers. The only fish which were keen to be caught were bleak, so Brian Hutchings went for them on pole and maggot, winning with 6.2.0.

Using a stick float, Richard Martin weighed in five nice roach, plus some bits, for a second-placed 3.8.0, while there was a tie for third between Brian Horseman and Bryan Bull, both with 1.6.0 Kidlington’s Green Road SC Cup was fished by 11 on a very hard Bullingdon Lake.

Paul Jackman just nudged in front of Dave Britnell with 5.11.0 of bits on pole and maggot.

Dave settled for a second-placed 5.9.0, five roach taken on maggot over groundbait.

Also fishing maggot over groundbait, Alan Middleton caught 55 small silver fish for a third-placed 4.0.0.

Points after 8 matches: H Clarke 51, J Bean 49, D Britnell 41.

The Thames at Benson was the venue for Benson’s Bill Biggs Memorial fished by nine anglers.

It was cold at the start and I was told there was a slight frost, while the river was still pushing through.

Fishing a 4m whip and maggot, Jonho Johnson took a winning 3.15.0 of small roach and bleak.

Ian Fisher used a lollipop float with bread for 3.0.0 of roach and second place, followed jointly by Tony Krason and Dave Head with 2.10.00. Both used maggot on the pole and the best fish was a 1.10.0 perch to Tony.
