Chinnor 14, Henley Hawks 22

Henley Hawks proved they are Oxfordshire's leading side and rose to fifth in the National 3 South table with this victory at Kingsey Road.

Only some sloppy handling prevented Henley adding to their three first-half tries as they led 19-0 at the break.

But Chinnor, who passed up at least three kickable penalties in the opening period, came back strongly and fell just short of a losing bonus point.

Hawks' players left the field disappointed they had not capitalised on their start to record a convincing win, while Chinnor will need to play a lot better to stay up.

Chinnor full back Richard Williams sent his kick-off straight out, handing Henley a platform that eventually led to their opening try.

A couple of much better directed kicks from fly half Tommy Turner brought Henley into scoring range.

And on five minutes, a well-executed lineout move ended with giant prop Glyn Hoosen-Owen barging his way over with Turner converting.

Improved driving play took Chinnor into the visitors' half, and they gained a numerical advantage when Henley prop Rowan Fuller was sin-binned for retaliation.

The resulting penalty from home fly half James Cathcart hit the post before his side had three let-offs in almost as many minutes.

Jack Shaylor, Pete Davies and Tom Haynes all wasted great chances with knock-ons, but centre Neil Baggett ran through almost unchallenged to score after a turnover in midfield. Turner's conversion made it 14-0.

It was soon 19-0 with hooker Simon Tattersall racing in from 30 metres for the try of the match after great work from Turner and the outstanding Matt Payne.

Chinnor ended the half strongly, but their reluctance to kick penalties left them scoreless.

Henley were again reduced to 14 men with Turner sin-binned after kicking the ball away.

His absence led to Danny Wells slotting a penalty just after half-time.

The introduction of Wasps Academy hooker Arthur Ellis and scrum half Toby Prescott gave Chinnor added zip with centre Darren Oxley maintaining a strong workrate.

Flanker Adam Hastings wasted a good chance to put wing Pip Seymour away before centre Trevor Powell took Angus Neilson's pass and jinked over, Cathcart converting.

The flow of the match was stopped when the unfortunate Wells was stretchered off and taken to hospital with a neck injury.

This meant Henley had to switch flanker Stean Williams to inside centre.

Chinnor kept on pressing the Henley defence and were eventually rewarded in stoppage time when wing Eric Brown forced his way over, with Williams converting from out wide, after linking well with Prescott.
