Bromley FC are holding a benefit match on Sunday, September 21 to raise money for former Oxford United midfielder Rob Hughes, who was left fighting for his life after being brutally attacked by a group of youths in Crete.
The game will be between a Legends XI, featuring stars such as Alan Pardew, John Salako and Kit Symons, and former England cricketers Alex Stewart and Mark Butcher, and a Bromley XI.
As reported previously in the Oxford Mail, Hughes – who made five sub appearances for the U's in the early part of the 2005-6 season – was left in a coma after having his head bottled and stamped on by the yobs outside a nightclub in the unprovoked attack in June in the popular holiday resort of Malia.
He had three life-saving operations, removing part of his skull to reduce the swelling on his bleeding brain.
He underwent a fourth operation at the end of August and is on the road to recovery.
He was about to be signed by Bromley before the incident.
