BEN Nelson is enjoying the freedom being afforded to him in Oxford United’s backline.
A noticeable feature in United’s draw at home to Derby County on Tuesday night was Nelson bringing the ball out from the back and initiating attacks with his ability to thread passes forward.
It’s a strategy not without its risks, but the reward allow the U’s an alternative way to build attacks.

Leicester City loanee Nelson said: “I’ve always done that throughout the years. I feel like I’ve got the attributes to step in and use my pace and power.
“I’m predominantly right-footed, but I’d like to think I’ve got a good left on me, so I try to use it as much as possible.”
He added: “I’m looking to stay in the team now and show everyone what I can do.
“We all obviously look to build a partnership. It’s always good for a team when the back four has good partnerships, and I feel like we’re doing that now.
“The experience you’re going to get in this league with the opponents you’re going to come across is second to none.”
Reflecting on the 1-1 draw against the Rams, Nelson said: “We were definitely on top in the first half, and we needed to take our opportunities and punish them while we were on top, so it’s disappointing.
“When we’re defending deep, we’ve always looked in control, and that’s something we do well.
“We just need to maybe start the press higher and keep it in their half more.
“You’ve got to be aligned as a team and know what you’re looking for. The run at home has been so good, so we’re glad to keep that going.
“We need to start converting the draws into wins soon, but it’ll come.”
