ALMOST £14,000 was raised on the gate at a match to support the family of Abingdon United midfielder Jack Badger, who passed away aged 24 last month.

United’s Challenge Cup fixture against Wantage Town, a former club of Badger’s, was relocated to The Northcourt on October 4, and Abingdon have now said how much money was raised on the night.

The club posted on social media to confirm that £13,922 was donated on the gate, with all proceeds to be given to Badger’s family.

United said: “The recent Friday game at home to Wantage Town, one of his former clubs, has raised an incredible amount to go into our fundraiser for Jack Badger’s daughter.

“From everybody at the club, thank you so much for your generosity.”

The match against Wantage saw a record attendance at The Northcourt, as a crowd of 1,567 turned out for the game.

Abingdon came back to win the match 3-2, recovering from going behind six minutes before the break to level matters through Casey Highmoor three minutes into first half stoppage time.

The visitors nudged in front again though shortly before the hour mark, but strikes from John Mills and Joe Green in the 82nd and 87th minute respectively ensured victory for United.

In addition to the gate proceeds, a GoFundMe launched to help with funeral costs and to support Badger’s family has raised more than £32,000.

It had an initial target of £1,000, but that was surpassed in no time at all, and upon publication, had raised more than £32,300 from more than 1,000 donations.
