An Oxford United forward has been selected to play for the England Under-21s.

Dane Scarlett has been called up to the squad for the upcoming games against Ukraine and Azerbaijan.

Oxford forward Scarlett – who is on loan from Tottenham – has been included alongside Luton defender Teden Mengi who has been added to coach Ben Futcher’s selection for the European Championship qualifiers as a replacement for Tino Livramento, who was a late call-up to the senior side

Mengi has featured once for the under-21s in a 7-0 win over Luxembourg in March having impressed for the Hatters in the Premier League last season, making 30 appearances.

He previously played two games for Manchester United before moving to Kenilworth Road in 2023.

Scarlett has also featured once internationally and is currently on his third loan away from Spurs, making five appearances for Oxford in the Championship but is yet to score.

Futcher’s team need a victory over Ukraine at the Vitality Stadium on Friday to have any chance of qualifying automatically for next year’s finals.

Even with a win they would still require three points against Azerbaijan at Ashton Gate on Tuesday and for Serbia to get a result against Ukraine, otherwise they will enter a play-off.

Scarlett was once Tottenham’s youngest-ever player when he made his debut as a 16-year-old in the Europa League.

At international level, Scarlett was previously involved in the England Under-19 team which won the European Championships in 2022, and he has scored 20 times across Under-16 to Under-20 level.
