FOOTBALL clubs across Oxfordshire are paying tribute to Abingdon United midfielder Jack Badger, who has passed away aged 24.

His team confirmed the news in a social media post earlier today, remembering a ‘character on and off the pitch’.

The post saw a number of quotes and replies from other clubs and those wishing to pay tribute to Badger.

The club posted on social media: “Abingdon United are devastated to learn of the sudden passing of our first team player and dear friend Jack Badger.

“Our thoughts at this hardest of times are with all of Jack’s loved ones, his family, his friends and his teammates.

“A character on and off the pitch, Jack will be missed by all of us at Abingdon United. You are so loved Jack, rest in peace our Badge.”

The post was quoted by Oxford United, who said: “Everyone at Oxford United is devastated to learn of the passing of U’s fan Jack Badger.

“We send our sincere condolences to Jack’s family and friends during this incredibly difficult time.”

U’s legend James Constable added: “My thoughts are with all of Jack’s family and friends at this very sad time. RIP Jack.”

Abingdon were due to face Didcot Town in the Hellenic Veterans Prem Division this evening, but the fixture has been postponed out of respect for Badger.

The Railwaymen posted: “The Veterans League clash between Didcot Town and Abingdon United this evening has been postponed following the sudden passing of Abingdon first team player Jack Badger.

“Everyone at Didcot Town would like to offer their deepest condolences to the family and friends of Jack and to everyone involved at Abingdon United. Our thoughts are with you at this sad time.”

One of Badger’s former clubs, Wantage Town, remembered a player who ‘wore his heart on his sleeve’ on the pitch.

The Freds posted: “Everyone at Wantage Town is devastated to learn of the passing of former player Jack Badger.

“On the pitch he wore his heart on his sleeve and off it, never had anything but a cheeky smile on his face. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.”

Southern League Central Division side North Leigh were among the Oxfordshire sides also to pay tribute to Badger.

The Millers said: “Everyone at North Leigh FC is shocked to learn about the passing of Abingdon United player Jack Badger.

“We all wish to extend our condolences to all of Jack’s friends, teammates and family at this incredibly sad time. Rest in peace.”

Milton United posted: “Everyone at Milton United is saddened to learn about the recent passing of Jack Badger.

“Although Jack never played for Milton, he was well known to all of the players and well liked within the local football community.

“Our sincerest condolences are extended to everyone who knew him, and of course, his family and close friends.”
