ED Waldron has revealed which Sky Bet Championship rival was able to nip and sign a couple of Oxford United’s transfer targets this summer.

United added 16 players to their squad, but inevitably were unable to get their first choice every time, and missed out on targets to other clubs.

U’s head of football operations Waldron said Queens Park Rangers signed a couple of players that United wanted, while offering an insight into the summer transfer window.

Waldron told BBC Radio Oxford’s The Dub podcast: “We missed out on players, of course. Every window you do, you don’t get every single one you wanted.

“QPR took a couple that we were interested in, but we knew very early on we’re competing with 23 massive clubs, plus Birmingham that are doing some incredible things in League One, and Wrexham, who are a great story at the moment, and Charlton, and the other big clubs in League One.

“We knew these were going to be the teams that we were competing against, but we very much identified players that we knew were hungry to play in the Championship, and succeed in the Championship.

“Whether that’s lads that have had a taste of it, and were back in League One, or leaving a Championship club, or whether that’s boys that haven’t really played at that level, but we feel like they can, and they’ve got the skillset to have a career at the level.

“I was really pleased with what we pitched, and what our outcomes were, because it quite easily could’ve been head in the clouds trying to get some superstar players, miss out, and then you’re scrambling a little bit.”

Interestingly, of the nine players signed by QPR this summer, eight of them arrived from clubs abroad.

Only right back Harrison Ashby joined from a UK side, having signed from Newcastle United on loan.
