OXFORD United took their summer incomings to numbers 13 and 14 with the double swoop yesterday of Marselino Ferdinan and Hidde ter Avest.

The U’s must comply with EFL rules, with the League’s 2024/25 handbook stating that Sky Bet Championship clubs can have squads of up to 25 players.

An unlimited number of Under-21 players are allowed without registration, but all loanees must be included in the 25-man squad.

United, who currently only have two loanees in the form of Malcolm Ebiowei and Dane Scarlett, can have as many loanees within the 25-player squad, but can only name up to five on a matchday.

The U’s must also have one ‘club developed’ player in the squad, with the likes of Sam Long, James Golding, Tyler Goodrham and Gatlin O’Donkor all fitting that.

With 10 days to go until the summer transfer window closes, where do United stand when it comes to their 25-man squad?

So as things stand, the U’s are three players above the 25-man quota. A loan move for Max Woltman seems inevitable, while Marcus McGuane hasn’t been involved in the matchday squad for any of the first three games of the season.

McGuane too is therefore one of those who could leave on loan, or even on a permanent basis.

Head coach Des Buckingham wants all three goalkeepers in Cumming, Eastwood and Ingram, effectively ruling out an exit in that department.

If McGuane and Woltman indeed are two of the players to make way, it would still leave Buckingham with a headache in terms of the final player to leave out.

A loan exit for summer signing Jack Currie, a move for Jordan Thorniley, or even leaving out the injured Will Goodwin seem the most likely resolutions.

All this of course could be further complicated by any more incomings during the transfer window, as any player aged over 21 would have to be included in the squad.
