CAMERON Brannagan’s knee slide celebration during last season’s play-offs has been immortalised by a fan who has had the moment tattooed onto his leg.

Less than 24 hours after Oxford United’s Sky Bet League One play-off final second leg victory at Peterborough United, supporter Joe Lane posted on Twitter that he would get the tattoo if the U’s won the final.

Brannagan scored a crucial penalty against the Posh, to put United 2-1 in front on aggregate just minutes after the tie had been levelled, and he celebrated with a knee slide.

After the U’s beat Bolton Wanderers in the Wembley final, Lane stuck to his word and got the tattoo over two sessions at Brass House Tattoos in Winchcombe, six miles north-east of Cheltenham.

“The tweet started everything off. The way we got to the play-offs and how we got there, I put the tweet out and the rest is history,” Lane told this newspaper.

“He’s my favourite player and has been for the last few seasons. He’s shown a lot of loyalty and he’s done so much for the club.

“Getting that goal back in the play-offs was massive, and it was the best celebration.”

Lane spent eight hours across two sessions with tattooist Thomas Boyce, to complete the ink on the side of his left leg.

Having had the tattoo finished last Wednesday, it attracted plenty of attention from fellow United fans when Lane went to the pre-season friendly against Palermo at the weekend.

He said: “I went to the game on Saturday, and went to J’s Sports Bar before, and there were people coming up to me and asking if I was the guy with the Brannagan tattoo.

“It’s not the most painful area for a tattoo, but the second session had the shading, so that bit hurt the most.”

With the U’s set for an exciting first season in the second tier for 25 years, there is the potential for many more iconic moments in the months ahead.

“I’ll get Des [Buckingham] if he takes us to the Premier League,” said Lane.

For now though, Lane’s focus, just like the United squad, is on upsetting the odds in the Championship.

The U’s are among many bookmakers’ favourites to be relegated straight back to League One, but then again, Leicester City were famously 5,000-1 to lift the Premier League title in the 2015/16 season.

Lane said: “Out of the three teams that went up, I think we’ve done the best business.

“There are a few players pushing for all the positions, and if we have everyone fit, I think we’ll be alright.

“I don’t think we’ll relegated, I think we can be mid-table and have a decent season.”
