OXFORD United remain in the hunt for a striker during the transfer window, head coach Des Buckingham has confirmed.

The U’s relied heavily on Mark Harris to lead the line last season, with the Welshman missing just three games in all competitions.

And all three of those matches came when he served a three-game suspension following his red card at home to Port Vale.

Aside from Harris, United can only call upon Will Goodwin and Gatlin O’Donkor as recognised centre forwards, but neither has played Sky Bet Championship football before.

Buckingham said: “It’s clear this club’s been looking at another centre forward to support and complement Mark Harris for the last two seasons, and not just the one that’s coming.

“Mark went through last season almost carrying that front line as a number nine by himself, until we brought Will in, and then of course Will got injured.

“We know we can’t do that again this season. We can’t rely on just Mark Harris and his goals.

“We need to make sure whether it’s through performance or need because of injury and suspension, that we have someone who can come on and either take that on from Mark or play instead of him because of the amount of the games and the demands of the league.

“We’re looking. We’ve got people we’re looking at. It’s just about making sure we take our time to get the right one rather than rush into a decision.”
