DES Buckingham says there is more to come from Oxford United in the transfer market, but the U’s may have to be a little patient after a productive window so far.

Wide duo Matt Phillips and Malcolm Ebiowei made it signings 10 and 11 respectively for United this summer, after Buckingham predicted a couple of fresh faces prior to this afternoon’s friendly against Palermo.

Speaking after the midweek victory over Southampton, U’s head coach Buckingham said there would ‘hopefully be a couple’ of new signings prior to the weekend, and that was delivered in the form of Phillips and Ebiowei.

‘Hopefully a couple’: Des Buckingham gives update on signings before weekend

Buckingham said: “I said about bringing two in before the weekend, and we’ve been able to do that.

“To bring in the quality of Matt Phillips to our forward line, and then the potential and excitement of Malcolm, it fills two areas where we were really keen to add to.

“We did a lot of work in the back end, and in our midfield in particular, but adding those two players will allow us to play the way we want a little bit more, and gives us a good mix which we’re trying to build.

“It’s not just about adding players, but adding players that will contribute to how we want to play, and that experience of the level of football we’re about to go into.

“Malcolm should be good to go from the start. He was training with Crysal Palace for four weeks before they went to the US.

“Matt will be a week or so, maybe two weeks away. He’d been training by himself, and we had him in for a week training with the team, but now we’ve permanently signed him, we need to make sure we put a plan in place that allows him once he steps onto the field, that he stays on the field.”

In terms of the potential for future additions, Buckingham still wants to add further to his squad, with a centre back, winger and centre forward the most likely areas for reinforcement.

Buckingham said: “There’s a bit more we want to do, and we’ve got the ability to still do. It’s about making sure the right player becomes available.

“There hasn’t been a great deal of movement in the transfer window. We’re the odd exception where we’ve gone out and done that many that it’s difficult to keep track of.

“We’ve had a significant shift in terms of adding the types of players that will allow us to do what we want to do in the Championship, but we still feel there’s room to add across two or three departments.

“It’s about being patient, and we can be because of the business we’ve done, and wait for that right player to come up.”
