THREE former finalists fought their way to the semi-final play-offs of the Oxford singles.
Kevin Baker (Gladiators) dispatched of Ray Grant 2-0 in the first round (3-2, 3-2), beat Walter Harwood in the next round, and was then pitted up against teammate and four-time runner-up Kevin Giles.
Baker set and won the opening leg 4-3, and in the next leg, Giles blobbed out, leaving Baker to hit the wining doll with his first stick.
Two-time runner-up Andy Beal (Gladiators) went through without dropping a leg, but had a couple of tough games.
In the first round against Mark Bayliss, a set of one by Bayliss was never going to be enough as Beal hit the two needed. In the second leg, a set of four from Beal was enough as Bayliss could only hit two in reply.
In the next round against Paul Edwards, the first leg had to be decided on a one-stick shoot-out after it was drawn 3-3 and 1-1 on three-sticks, before Beal prevailed, hitting the only doll in the one-sticker. A set of four in the second leg from Beal was enough to see him through.
In the next round against Neil Pratley, Beal won the opener 4-1. The second leg was tied 2-2 before Beal won the three-sticker 2-1. In the final game, two sets of three and five saw Beal though against Dave Trim.
Roger Goodall (White House) was drawn against Catherine Wheel opponents all the way through, and won the first round opening leg against Graham Hambridge on three-sticks 2-1 after it was tied 3-3, and won the second leg 3-2.
In the next round, he once again had to rely on three-sticks to win the opening leg against Phil Cassidy after it was tied 2-2. Goodall sneaked the second leg 2-1, and in the final game against Johnny McMahon, Goodall won both legs 3-2, 2-1.
Stuart Bishop (Ampleforth) had an easy start against former teammate Dave Simms, when Simms failed to trouble the doll in the opening leg. Bishop set three in the second leg, which Simms matched. A maximum three in the three-sticker saw Bishop through when Simms hit one in reply.
In the next round against Kevin Stuart, Bishop set and won the first leg 3-2. Stuart levelled in the next leg 2-1 and then set three in the final leg, which Bishop matched. Stuart then set one in the three-sticker, which was not enough as Bishop clanged off the two needed.
Against Pete Rampton, Bishop set in the opening leg with an impressive five, and in reply, Rampton fell short with four.
Rampton levelled in the next leg, hitting three when chasing a set of two. A set of four was enough to send Bishop through to the play-offs.
