CAMERON Brannagan is targeting the Premier League after penning a new long-term contract at Oxford United.

The 28-year-old midfielder’s previous deal was due to expire next summer, but his future has now been secured ahead of the Sky Bet Championship season.

Speaking directly after United’s play-off final victory at Wembley, Brannagan said the U’s should look to the example of Ipswich Town, who finished second in League One during the 2022/23 campaign, and backed that up with a second-placed finish in the Championship, securing a place in the Premier League.

Brannagan maintains that drive as the beginning of the Championship season edges closer.

After signing a new contract with United, he said: “I’m over the moon to be quite honest. I’ve been here now for a long, long time. It seems that way anyway.

“I’ve loved every minute of it, and last season was a special one. We want to push on now and do well this season, it’s a massive season for everybody at the club.

“It’s something I’m really pleased to be a part of, and that I’m massively looking forward to.”

Brannagan came through the academy at Liverpool, and played nine games for the first team.

He had a loan spell with Fleetwood Town in the second half of the 2016/17 season, and joined the U’s for an undisclosed fee in January 2018.

“Me being dead honest, I didn’t expect to be here this long. It’s crazy because I’ve loved every single minute of my time here,” said Brannagan.

“The first season I was here, I missed home quite a bit, which led me to thinking that I might move back.

“I love it here. I love the place, I love the people, and I love playing for Oxford United.

“There’s only one place I want to be, and it’s here. I’m over the moon to get this deal done.

“It’s a massive season for myself personally, and for the club, and something I really cannot wait for.”

He added: “My motive has been to try and get the club to the Championship, as a collective, as a team, as a club, and as a fanbase.

“We did that, and I know a lot of people are saying about trying to stay up, but I want to try and go to the Premier League, as mad as that sounds. That’s the new aim now.”

Brannagan’s importance to United was fully underlined last season, when he grabbed 13 goals in 51 games, as the U’s won promotion from League One. In total, he has netted 54 goals in 290 matches for United.
