GATLIN O’Donkor is determined to show what he can do out wide, as Oxford United continue to search for width in the transfer market.

The U’s can currently only call upon Owen Dale and summer signing Przemyslaw Placheta as senior options on the wings, with Tyler Goodrham now firmly regarded as a midfielder.

Due to the lack of options though, Goodrham has been used as a winger in pre-season, alongside O’Donkor, trialist Ovie Ejaria, and 17-year-old Aidan Elliott-Wheeler.

O’Donkor played the final half an hour from the right-hand side against Oxford City, and then got 75 minutes under his belt in that position at Solihull Moors.

Playing out wide allowed O’Donkor to power infield onto his left foot, and cause problems from there.

He said: “I just want to get out on the pitch and start showing people what I can really do, whether that’s up front or playing out wide. I just want to get on the pitch and express myself really.

“Playing out wide gives me a better view of the pitch. If I want to set the full back or come inside, I think it suits me.

“We’ll see how it goes with the recruitment side, and see what happens.

“The conversations with the manager have just been to fill the role, stay wide and express myself when I can.

“At the moment, I’m just doing what I can for the team and then see what happens in the future.”

O’Donkor played 26 times for United last season, before linking up with Vanarama National League side Barnet on loan from February onwards.

He scored five goals in 13 league matches for the Bees, where he got his first taste of a wider role.

“When I went to Barnet, that was the first time I really moved out wide,” said O’Donkor.

“That was a different system because I was playing more as a narrow right-sided striker, rather than high and wide.

“It’s always good to learn more than one position, it’s good for my development overall.

“Going out wide was something that we looked at, and that’s where I’ve been playing since we came back.

“I played out there in Spain, I’ve been playing there in training, and then the last two games. It seems to be working pretty well, but we’ll see how I develop.”

He added: “Going on loan to Barnet was really good. It gave me the minutes I needed at the time, and it was the right decision to get some minutes and goals under my belt.

“That really put me in good stead coming into this pre-season, so I think it was good.

“I always want to do my best, and obviously here is where I want to be. If it comes to the point where I’m not really getting the minutes I need to develop, a loan could be looked at, but first of all, it’s about playing for this team and showing people what I can do.

“I’ve just got to keep my head down and keep working hard.”
