SAM Long is set to move infield to centre back for Oxford United, at least for the foreseeable.
The 29-year-old played in the middle of the U’s defence for the pre-season wins against Oxford City and Solihull Moors, partnering Jordan Thorniley from the start against the Hoops and from the bench at the Moors.
Long’s versatility has seen him feature at centre half and full back for United, while he ended last season at right back, including in the Sky Bet League One play-off final win at Wembley.

The U’s have already snapped up Peter Kioso at right back during the transfer window, and have been linked with moves for Blackpool’s Jordan Gabriel and Max Johnston, of Sturm Graz.
According to The Sun’s football writer Alan Nixon, United have lodged a second bid for Gabriel, but that has fallen short of the Seasiders’ valuation.
U’s head coach Des Buckingham said of Long: “We know Sam can play at right back. I think he’s got as good strengths at centre back than as he has at right back, if not better.
“We’ve put Stephan Negru out on loan to Salford, so at the moment, I feel that he can add a bit more value inside, and we know he can do it on the right.
“It’s good to see him in these games in that position.”
