OXFORD United claimed back-to-back 3-0 wins in successive days to kick-start their pre-season campaign in front of fans.

The U’s recorded a 1-0 defeat against Portuguese second division side Academico de Viseu while out in Spain, prior to the victories against Oxford City and Solihull Moors.

There were a number of eye-catching performances, while a good handful of summer signings were on display for the first time.

We picked out some of the key talking points from the games against the Hoops and the Moors.

Ovie Ejaria on trial

When the team sheets dropped before the match at Court Place Farm, the first thing many supporters will have noticed was the trialist in the United side.

Former Reading winger Ejaria trained with the U’s in the lead-up to the Hoops fixture, and started out on the left-hand side.

Ejaria showed some decent moments, not least with a ball through to Marcus McGuane, who assisted Louie Sibley for the opener, and then an assist himself when he slid in Will Goodwin to double the lead.

Ejaria can also play in an advanced midfield role, and there were times when he came infield rather than looking to beat his man on the outside.

He was bright enough though, and among the 10 alterations made shortly after the hour mark, with Tyler Goodrham coming on in his place.

Ejaria was then an unused substitute against the Moors.

Gatlin O’Donkor out wide

If there was one player who impressed in the double-header, it was O’Donkor.

The 19-year-old played the final half an hour from the right-hand side against the Hoops, regularly looking to squeeze into the penalty box on his left foot, and create from there.

Against the Moors, he started and played 75 minutes on the right wing, and his approach again was to power his way through and cause problems.

He needs to be more clinical when in front of goal, but they were certainly two lively displays from the academy graduate.

Need for wide players

What the use of trialist Ejaria and O’Donkor out wide does highlight though, is that United need wingers.

Josh Murphy’s move to Portsmouth clearly provides a sizeable hole to fill, and at the moment, Owen Dale and Przemyslaw Placheta are the only two senior wide players in the U’s squad.

Goodrham is now very much seen as a midfielder, but he and 17-year-old Aidan Elliott-Wheeler were the other two players, alongside Ejaria and O’Donkor, who played out wide in both friendlies.

Des Buckingham has been clear that after a very promising start to the summer transfer window, it is the final third which now requires the most attention.
