OXFORD United have boosted their attack with the signing of Poland international Przemyslaw Placheta.

The 26-year-old arrives as a free agent after a short-term deal with Swansea City expired last month.

He told the club website: “I’m very happy to be an Oxford United player and I can’t wait to play in front of the fans and meet my new teammates.

“I know I can be a good player in the Championship. My strengths are my dribbling, speed and directness and I know what the gaffer expects from his wingers.

“I want to add goals and assists to this team and I will do everything for the club to have a successful season.”

U’s head coach Des Buckingham added: “We are extremely pleased to have a player of Placheta’s quality in our squad for this Championship season.

“He offers incredible pace in our wide area and fits the profile we are looking for in our wide players.

“To add another player to the squad that has experience at this level is really important, and we believe Przemyslaw can make a big difference going forward and be a player that gets fans off seats.”

Placheta, who can play at left back or on the wing, played for a number of clubs at youth level before joining RB Leipzig in 2015.

He left two years later without making a first team appearance, and went on to represent Sonnenhof Grossaspach in the German third tier, before spells with Polish sides Pogon Siedlce and Podbeskidzie.

Placheta moved to Slask Wroclaw ahead of the 2019/20 season, and then joined Norwich City for a reported £2.5 million in July 2020.

He played 28 times for the Canaries in his debut campaign in England, scoring once with a late equaliser in a 2-2 draw at home to Preston North End.

Placheta also made his international debut that season, as Poland beat Ukraine 2-0 in a friendly in November 2020, while he appeared once at the delayed European Championships in 2021, as Poland lost 3-2 against Sweden.

The 2021/22 season saw Placheta feature 12 times in the Premier League, while he joined Birmingham City on loan in the second tier at the beginning of the following campaign, but that was cut short due to injury after making five appearances.

Placheta played 19 times for the Canaries last season, and in February, linked up with the Swans on a deal until the end of the campaign. He played 10 times, with eight of those starts.

In total, Placheta has won seven caps for Poland, the last of which came in November 2021. He wasn’t named in the squad for either the 2022 World Cup or this summer’s Euros.

Placheta becomes United’s eighth signing this summer, following goalkeepers Jamie Cumming and Jacob Knightbridge, full backs Peter Kioso and Jack Currie, and midfield trio Idris El Mizouni, Louie Sibley and Will Vaulks.
