OXFORD United began their pre-season schedule with a 1-0 defeat against Portuguese second division side Academico de Viseu yesterday afternoon.
Viseu took the lead inside 10 minutes when Andre Clovis got on the end of a low ball across the box and slotted under Jamie Cumming.
United’s first sight of goal came after 16 minutes, when Aidan Elliott-Wheeler, fresh off signing his first professional contract last month, shot just over from the edge of the area, while Viseu then hit the bar with a 25-yard dipping effort.

In the second half, Gatlin O’Donkor impressed as he switched between the wings, while Cameron Brannagan had a chance to score just before the hour mark, when he reached Ruben Rodrigues’ cross at the back post, but couldn’t find the target.
O’Donkor and Brannagan both had efforts from distance, but couldn’t find the net, and with seven minutes to go, the U’s felt they were denied a penalty when O’Donkor was brought down, but the referee instead signalled for a free kick.
First half XI: Cumming (Eastwood 30); Johnson, Moore, Brown, Currie; McGuane, Vaulks, Sibley; Dale, Goodwin, Elliot-Wheeler.
Second half XI: Eastwood (Knightbridge 60); Kioso, Long, Thorniley, Bennett; Brannagan, McEachran, Goodrham; Rodrigues, Harris, O’Donkor.
