OXFORD United have made their sixth summer signing with the addition of left back Jack Currie.

The 22-year-old arrives from Sky Bet League Two side AFC Wimbledon, where he had a year left on his contract, for an undisclosed fee.

Currie, who has been a long-term target for the U’s, came through the Dons academy and made his debut in February 2021.

That came in an EFL Trophy tie at the Kassam Stadium, a clash that United won 3-1.

Currie spent time on loan at Eastbourne Borough in the Vanarama National League South during the 2021/22 season, before his breakthrough campaign the following season saw him make 48 appearances for the Dons.

During the most recent campaign, Currie played 45 times.

He told the U’s club website: “The gaffer, the coaching staff, and obviously the project they had laid out is something I’m really excited about and is something I’ve been looking forward to for so long.

“The club is at the stage now where it’s looking to push on and it is a privilege to be a part of. The gaffer has trust in me to do a job and obviously perform week in, week out with the boys.

“I’m the type of player to play for the badge if the cause is right, which it is here. I’ll run through brick walls, I’ll play with passion and with my heart on my sleeve. At the end of the day, I need to do a job defensively, and that’s what I like to think I’m very good at.”

Head coach Des Buckingham added: “Jack is a player that has really impressed us and we are delighted to bring him in.

“He fits in perfectly to the way we want to play and arrives with plenty of experience in league football.

“We believe he can make a positive impact on our current group and also has the type of character that will help us continue to drive and develop the culture and environment within our team.”

Currie’s arrival means United now have three senior left backs, with Joe Bennett and Greg Leigh also contracted to the club.

Last month, Bennett agreed a deal for the forthcoming season, while as it stands, it’s possible Leigh could play higher up the pitch for the U’s.

The Jamaica international has featured as a winger both off the bench and from the start of games, and with United still looking to find a replacement on the left wing for Josh Murphy, there is the potential to use Leigh in a more advanced role if required.

The U’s have also signed goalkeepers Jamie Cumming and Jacob Knightbridge, right back Peter Kioso, and midfield duo Louie Sibley and Will Vaulks this summer.
