OXFORD United goalkeeper Ed McGinty is attracting interest from various clubs.

The 24-year-old is on loan at League of Ireland Premier Division side Sligo Rovers, where he has impressed manager John Russell.

McGinty returned to his former club in January after struggling for game time at United, where he has made just 10 appearances.

Those all came during the 2022/23 season, with seven games in cup competitions, plus three matches in Sky Bet League One while Simon Eastwood missed out with a calf problem.

Russell told the Irish Mirror: “Ed has a year left on his contract with Oxford and there’s plenty of interest in him. We’re one of a number of clubs interested in him.

“There are two options here. Extend the loan or you buy the player. There’s a lot of stuff going on in the background and we just have to put our best foot forward.

“I know Ed is happy here and has done really well for us, but I also know he has ambitions to play at the highest level.

“The whole point of his loan here was to play week in, week out and get his profile and confidence up and he’s done that, so we have to wait and see.”

Russell added: “You want to keep your best players and he has been one of our best this year. There’s a lot of moving parts and it’s never straightforward.

“These players who come on loan, they’re on bigger contracts and are bigger profiles than lads coming through the academy or our league.

“It’s a bit more complex, but if we can keep Ed McGinty, I feel we can have a really strong second half of the season.”
