MARK Harris has eyes only on success as a team with Oxford United, after being nominated for the Sky Bet League One player of the month.

The 25-year-old striker is one of four players shortlisted for April’s award, alongside Blackpool goalkeeper Dan Grimshaw, Reading midfielder Lewis Wing, and Bolton Wanderers forward Aaron Collins.

Harris scored six goals in six games to help the U’s reach the play-offs, including braces in the 4-0 victories against Fleetwood Town and Burton Albion.

The former Cardiff City player also opened the scoring from the penalty spot in United’s 5-0 hammering of Peterborough United, and got the opener in the crucial 2-1 win at Exeter City on the final day of the regular campaign.

Harris said: “It’d be a nice little individual award, but I’m not too focused on that. If I get it, happy days and I’ll take it, of course.

“It’d be a nice award to get, but my aim is promotion and that’s what I want.”

He added: “I had two or three months where it wasn’t quite going for me, but I kept my head down and worked hard, and I’m getting the rewards now.

“I’ve got to keep my foot on the gas and keep going.”

The turning point in the U’s season appears to be the 5-0 defeat at Bolton Wanderers on March 12, with United losing just once in the following eight games.

Harris said: “After that Bolton game, we had a hard look at ourselves. That wasn’t any way near what we’re capable of, and since then, we’ve put it to the side.

“We went through it, and what we needed to do better. Then we put it to the side, and we’ve all come together.

“You can see the way we’re playing is much better, and you can see what we’re trying to do on and off the ball.

“We’re all pushing in the same direction, and you can see that in the last few weeks. It’s been great, and hopefully it can continue.”

He added: “It’s not going to be plain sailing when the manager changes halfway through the season, but fair play to the gaffer and the coaching staff.

“We got through that tough period that we had and now we’re playing some good stuff on and off the ball.

“We’re much more compact and it’s harder to break us down, and recently we’ve been brilliant, so hopefully it can carry on.”

If Harris is to scoop the player of the month gong, he will need to fight off competition from Grimshaw, who kept four clean sheets in six games, and Wing, who scored four goals, all from outside the box, plus Collins, who also netted six goals in six matches, including a hat-trick in a 5-2 victory against Reading.
