JORDAN Flynn is gearing up to ‘take the shine off’ his next opponent, the highly-rated Cameron Vuong.

Flynn was set to fight Vuong at the weekend, but the bout was removed from the Jordan Gill v Zelfa Barrett card due to a ‘minor injury’ suffered by Vuong.

Rather than a 10-round fight with Vuong, Flynn instead went head-to-head in a six-round bout with Tanzanian boxer Tampela Maharusi, winning 59-54 on points.

Flynn told this newspaper: “He came out and was a lot more awkward than anyone I’d fought before. He was a bit of a weird fighter.

“He’s quite small and he’d also randomly run out at you, but it was good to get six rounds under my belt.

“I only had six rounds, so knew I had to set things up quite quickly against him. He’d fought a few weeks before, so he was ready, and for him, it was a massive opportunity on a massive card.

“We beat a good guy though, and he’s a highly-rated fighter by his team, and was quite a handful.

“It was a good fight to keep me busy, and one to tick off and get on with the next one.

“There were 300 that came up from Oxford, and the arena was full, so the atmosphere was good, and there was a lot of noise for me.”

Flynn now has just over two months to prepare for the grudge fight against Vuong, with that set to take place at the Resorts World Arena in Birmingham on June 22.

“After the fight, they got Cameron in the ring. He was ringside for the fight. I enjoy that kind of stuff, and I’m glad he was there,” said Flynn.

“It’s good hype for the fight in June. Him pulling out last time makes it even more massive this time.

“Oxford United fans have been getting in touch with me, and they can’t wait. There’s no game, and it’s only an hour on the train, so there’ll be a lot of fans and support.

“We’ve got nine weeks, so it’s a couple of days just to recover, and then it’s straight back to camp, to get going again.

“Come nine weeks’ time, we’ll be flying. It’ll be a big build-up and there’ll be a lot coming out in the build-up to this fight.

“This one really will put our name up there, and propel us. Eddie Hearn raves about him, so beating him would take the shine off him and put it on me.

“I think it’s the right fight for me, and a gamble for them because he doesn’t know how good I am. They believe in him, but it doesn’t look good if he loses.”
