WEIGHTLIFTERS from an Oxfordshire club secured three medals at recent national championships.

St Birinus Weightlifting competed at the England Age Group Championships in Maidstone, Kent, and came back with two gold medals and a silver.

Sebastian Lawton took gold in the Under-20 67kg class, while Boracay Arnold also claimed gold, in the Under-17 49kg class. Corey Swaine won a silver medal in the Under-23 61kg class.

Arnold, a Year 11 student at St Birinus School, received particular praise from St Birinus Weightlifting head coach Philip Karlsson.

He told this newspaper: “The performance of all three lifters was excellent. In particular, Boracay as it was his first competition.

“His gold medal continued St Birinus School’s record of at least one national champion for the last 30 years.”

Last year, a four-man team from St Birinus Weightlifting finished fourth at an international junior tournament in La Coruna, Spain.

The outstanding performance came from Lawton, who lifted a personal best of 101kg in the snatch lift and 128kg in the clean and jerk lift, giving him a total of 229kg and a third-place finish in the individual competition.

Swaine lifted 80kg and 97kg, providing him a total of 177kg, while Harrison Deeley lifted 75kg and 115kg to give him a 190kg total.

Alfie Swaine produced an excellent performance in his first international competition, lifting personal bests of 49kg and 68kg for a 117kg total.

St Birinus Weightlifting celebrated its 40th anniversary last year.
