FORMER Oxford United boss Michael Appleton has been sacked as head coach of Sky Bet League One rivals Charlton Athletic.
The Addicks fell to a 3-2 defeat at home to Northampton Town last night, a third loss on the bounce, and a sixth from their last seven, a run which includes United’s 2-1 win at The Valley on New Year’s Day.
Charlton haven’t won since November 28, when they claimed three points at home to Cheltenham Town.
Appleton leaves with the club 16th in the third tier, four points above the relegation zone.

A club statement released half an hour after the final whistle last night read: “Charlton Athletic can confirm that Michael Appleton has left the club with immediate effect after being relieved of his role as head coach.
“The club would like to thank Michael for his efforts during his time in charge.”
Appleton was only appointed by the Addicks on September 8, and has been backed in this month’s transfer window.
Undisclosed fees have been paid for Conor Coventry, Rarmani Edmonds-Green and Macauley Gillesphey, from West Ham United, Huddersfield Town and Plymouth Argyle respectively.
Sheffield Wednesday’s Tyreeq Bakinson, Manchester City midfielder Lewis Fiorini, and Ipswich Town striker Freddie Ladapo have all joined on loan, while goalkeeper Lewis Ward arrived on a free transfer after leaving Swindon Town.
