OXFORD United have reportedly agreed a six-figure transfer fee for Cheltenham Town striker Will Goodwin.

Both the U’s and Charlton Athletic have submitted bids of about £400,000 for the 21-year-old forward, who has scored six goals in 16 Sky Bet League One games this season. All of his strikes have come in his last nine league appearances.

The South London Press has reported that United offered better personal terms, while location is also believed to play a significant role in the potential move.

Speaking to BBC Radio Oxford Sport’s The Dub podcast earlier this week, United head coach Des Buckingham said: “I think everybody is in the market for a proven goalscorer. The problem is proven goalscorers come at a hefty cost, and that’s across any league across anywhere in the world.

“We need to recognise what we already have in our squad, and what I’m really enjoying right now is seeing the form of Mark Harris, with four goals in four games.

“That’s great because that helps us now and will help us throughout the rest of the window, but it’s about making sure we bring in some support to him, because whether that’s to rest him, it means we’ve got someone to take the load off.

“I think very often, trying to get a 20-goal-a-season striker in January, clubs’ valuation of what that looks like can almost double, if not treble.

“It’s then about making sure we utilise and use the skillset we have in our building, not only with players, but also our recruitment team.

“We’re clear on how we want to play and the type of player we want, and can play that role, and then it’s trying to recognise is there a player around that maybe isn’t hitting the goals they’re expected to hit, that we feel we could get a lot more out of.

“We’re the same as everyone else, we’re in the market for a goalscorer.”

Goodwin opened his account for the campaign with a brace in a 3-2 defeat at Blackpool on October 24, before scoring in four consecutive games, beginning against the U’s.

He scrambled in from close range to make it 2-0 in Buckingham’s first game as head coach, while further goals then followed against Charlton, Bristol Rovers and Leyton Orient.

Goodwin signed for Cheltenham for a fee of £20,000, from Stoke City, last January.

Harris meanwhile hit 10 goals in all competitions this season, following his brace at Carlisle United on Saturday.

Asked whether the Welsh striker could make it 20 goals by the end of the campaign, Buckingham responded: “He’s on 10 now, and we’ve got 20 games left to go, so you certainly couldn’t rule him out.

“Anyone we bring in isn’t to replace the likes of Mark Harris, it’s to support and complement what we have.

“We know that there are goals in Sparky, but it’s about making sure in a game, if we need to change it or freshen things, we have the ability to do that.”
