POLICE have arrested a man following a report of racial abuse aimed at an assistant referee during Oxford United’s win at Carlisle United.
The incident occurred in the home section of the crowd during the final 10 minutes of the game, the Cumbrian side reported.
In a statement, Cumbria Police said: “We can confirm a 38-year-old man from Carlisle has been arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated public order.
“The appeal was following a report of racial abuse during the Carlisle United v Oxford United fixture on Saturday at Brunton Park. Thank you to those that shared the appeal.”

The Brunton Park outfit had earlier said: “The club are assisting Cumbria Police in connection with a reported incident of racial abuse directed towards an assistant referee in Saturday’s game against Oxford United.
“The club deplore this abhorrent behaviour and condemn it in the strongest possible terms.
“We have assisted the police in identifying an individual of interest and we are supporting them in dealing with the incident.
“The incident occurred during the final 10 minutes of the match in the home section of the Andrew Jenkins Stand, sponsored by Pioneer Foodservice.”
