DES Buckingham has posted a classy message after leaving Indian Super League side Mumbai City for Oxford United.

It was announced yesterday evening that Oxford-born Buckingham would be taking on the head coach role at his hometown club.

It marked the end of a memorable time in India, having been appointed Mumbai City head coach in October 2021.

Earlier this year, he secured the league title in style as the team broke 15 records during the season, including the most points in a single ISL campaign (46) in addition to most goals (54).

The side also set a record for the longest winning streak (11 games) and longest unbeaten run (18 games).

Posting on Twitter, Buckingham wrote: “Yesterday marked the end of a wonderful journey as head coach of Mumbai City FC. We achieved so much together, making history and many special memories along the way.

“All the way from securing India’s first ever wins in the AFC Champions League in 2022, to lifting the ISL League Shield together last season.

“More importantly, the way we were able to achieve these milestones – playing some of the most exciting, free-flowing and high-scoring football – has been a pleasure to watch from the sidelines.

“Thank you to everyone across India for such a positive experience, and to our incredible fans, staff and players at Mumbai City FC for the unwavering support and passion throughout my time here.

“The time has come to move on and pursue an opportunity close to my heart back home, but I will always be a Mumbai City fan and I look forward to visiting the MFA again soon to thank you all in person.”

Buckingham was earlier filmed saying an emotional goodbye to Mumbai City supporters, who had gathered at the airport to wish him well as he returns to his roots.

The 38-year-old, sporting a Mumbai City scarf, was filmed saying: “The last 12 hours of my life have been difficult. I was very happy with things and it was very difficult to leave.

“It’s a country where I arrived two and a half years ago, and have been made to feel so welcome.

“For you to turn up at this time of night and see me off, I’ll never forget this. Thank you ever so much for the support you’ve given me and the team.

“Please continue to turn up at Mumbai, I know you will. Get behind them, and thank you very much from me.

“I’ll be supporting from Oxford and hopefully fans will support Oxford from here.”
