ROSS Jenkins is confident he can avoid a similar situation to that at Arsenal after adding another goalkeeper to his Oxford City squad.

The Hoops bolstered their goalkeeping department earlier this month with the loan signing of Southampton stopper Jack Bycroft until January.

The highly-rated 22-year-old made his City debut in Saturday’s 3-2 win at home to Woking, replacing Marcin Brzozowski in goal.

The Hoops also have Ebbsfleet United keeper Chris Haigh on loan for the season, with the 26-year-old starting the first 17 games of the campaign in the Vanarama National League.

With three goalies at the club all targeting regular game time, Jenkins is keen to steer clear of the situation which has developed at Arsenal.

Aaron Ramsdale began the season as the Gunners No 1, but was displaced by summer signing David Raya in September.

The Brentford loanee has however come under fire for a series of mistakes made in games.

Discussing his goalkeeping situation at City, former Watford midfielder Jenkins said: “This is the first season we’ve ever had a number one and a number two, in Marcin.

“Something we need everywhere is competition on the pitch and also off the pitch.

“I know there’s a bit of a situation surrounding the Arsenal debate, with two really top goalies and should you have a number two pushing the number one, and does it make the number one uncomfortable?

“I think that’s utter rubbish. If you’ve got a team with goalies and players pushing each other on and striving for the best, that’s going to make someone better.”

Bycroft, a former England Under-19 international, spent last season with Taunton Town in National League South, making 48 appearances and keeping 19 clean sheets.

His form saw him named in the division’s team of the season, alongside Hoops midfielder Zac McEachran.

Bycroft also spent time with Weymouth the season prior and had a loan spell with Aldershot Town earlier this campaign.

Jenkins said: “I’ve known about Jack for a long time. He’s a goalie that brings different qualities to us.

“Three goalies sounds a lot, but we’ve made the change for different circumstances.

“Jack’s in the building now and he brings a little bit more experience. He had a really good loan at Taunton and kept the most clean sheets in the league, and he had a good spell with Aldershot recently.

“He’s someone I’ve known of for a long time, and I have a good relationship with Southampton.

“For us, it’s about how can we get five or 10 per cent out of each department, and hopefully Jack cam come in and do that.”
