A CLUB record was broken as swimmers were accepted into 77 events at a regional championship.

Abingdon Vale Swimming Club (AVSC) saw 19 athletes aged 13 to 25 qualify for the Swim England South East Regional Winter Championships.

Many team members had returned from an overseas training camp in Lanzarote less than a week before, with swimmers meeting the ‘base’ consideration times for 81 events, being accepted into 77 of those, a record-breaking number for the club.

Podium spots were secured by Demetrios Gonias (junior bronze in 50m fly and 100m individual medley), Can Tugcetin (open gold 200m breaststroke and bronze 100m breaststroke) and Ellen Bagley (open gold 100m breaststroke).

Gonias and Bagley, plus Ziyang Yang and Jack Allman, broke AVSC club records.

Tugcetin and Bagley have since been selected to represent the South East region at January’s Euro Meet in Luxembourg.

Head coach Amanda Ford said: “We achieved an amazing set of results at the South East Winter Regionals. It was the most successful in our club’s history across a diverse range of events.

“Many swimmers elevated themselves to national level during the completion. All these achievements reflect consistent hard work and effort from the swimmers and coaches.

“We know Can and Ellen will have such an amazing experience in Luxembourg.”

AVSC’s qualifiers were Allman, Bagley, Gonias, Tugcetin, Yang, Elena Blake, Lily Brabbin, Joseph Bradshaw, Logan Bryan, Lucy Capper, Christopher Emberlin, Kayden Sillah, Edgar Stepliuk, Adrien Storck-Wihlidal, Theodora Wornham and Harrison Wright.
