ENVIRONMENTAL factors remain at the heart of Oxford United’s plans for a new stadium, the club’s chief executive has reiterated.

The U’s are looking to build a 16,000-capacity ground at The Triangle, south of Kidlington Roundabout, with the club’s licence agreement at the Kassam Stadium expiring in 2026.

On September 19, Oxfordshire County Council’s cabinet approved in principle the lease of the land, however a number of conditions must be met.

These include United obtaining planning permission from Cherwell District Council and the production of a net zero carbon plan.

Speaking upon the release of CGI images and a virtual flythrough of what the proposed new stadium could look like, U’s chief executive Tim Williams said: “The sustainability aspect of this is of absolute critical importance.

“It’s about making sure our carbon footprint for this entire stadium is as low as it can possibly be.

“That does mean taking some serious measures in terms of traffic and making sure we follow up on those promises we’ve made.

“I get people are concerned about parking, and transport, and traffic. Of course I understand that, nobody wants to be stuck in lines and lines of traffic, however that goal of 90 per cent of people coming to this stadium not by car is a real goal, not just a platitude.”
