Club captain Elliott Moore believes Oxford United can be a “match for anyone” for anyone this season as the U’s look to get back to winning ways.

In United’s last league outing, they fell to a late 2-1 loss to Port Vale after Liam Manning’s side had two men sent off.

This ended a four-game winning streak going into an international break but Moore is looking to “put it right” against Fleetwood Town this afternoon (September 16).

Moore said: “It is a weird feeling having a break in the season.

“You enjoy it to get some time away and spend with the family but you are eager to get back, especially after the result against Port Vale.

“We just want to put it right on Saturday against Fleetwood.”

Fleetwood will play their first game under a new manager as the club announced the appointment of Lee Johnson earlier this week.

Johnson has managed more than 500 games in the EFL and will be hoping to earn Fleetwood’s first win of the season, with the Cod Army only picking up one point from their opening six games.

On playing against different styles, Moore said: “You come up against different teams every week and they throw different challenges.

“At the end of the day, it is all about us, you need to know what their strengths are.

“But if we are on it, we know how well we can play as a team and a unit, then we know we can be a match for anyone.

“It is just important we focus on ourselves leading into the game and go show what we can do.”

The United boss has admitted to having a selection “headache”, particularly at centre back, but Moore believes this to be a positive.

He said: “Everyone has a value to add to the team. Even in training the levels have gone up massively because there is so much competition.

“We know if you have one lack game and you are out of the team, I think that is very good but we have a good group of lads and whether you play or don’t play everyone is supporting you from the sides and behind.

“I think because the level has gone up in training, you are desperate to play and your place is on the line. The performance levels have gone up and I think that has shown in the first six games.”

When asked whether being club captain protects his position, he said: “I know how this gaffer works and no one is safe.

“If I don’t have the performance expected of me and I am pulled out of the team, then that is rightly so. I will hold my hands up for that and that’s how it will be.

“I think with the training that we do, everyone is clear on what their role and responsibility is in the team.

Whether you play or don’t play, when you do get that chance you know what your role is in the team. I think that is massively important.”

Away from the pitch, Anneliese Dodds became the first MP to give their backing to Oxford United’s new stadium proposals when she hosted a reception on behalf of the U’s at the Houses of Parliament this week.

Speaking about the reception, Moore said: “It was very interesting, I have never been there before. It was an experience for me, speaking to different types of people who I probably wouldn’t mix around within my normal walk of life.

“It was good to hear the positive news about the stadium and what everyone thinks about it.

"Hopefully, that keeps going in the right direction and we will get a stadium sooner rather than later.”
