GREG Leigh reckons Oxford United are ‘due success’ as he hopes to bring over some of the tricks that helped him win promotion with Ipswich Town last season.
The 28-year-old left back put pen to paper on a permanent deal with the U’s yesterday, and arrives with a Sky Bet League One promotion on his CV.
Leigh played 14 times in the third tier for the Tractor Boys as they finished second during the previous campaign.

Discussing his move to United, the Jamaica international said: “I’m really excited. It’s something that’s been in the pipeline for a while and when it was initially talked about, it’s something that excited me.
“The main thing that excites me is the type of football the club play.
“I look at Oxford as a team that’s been on the brink of success for a long time.
“I’ve seen them achieve a play-off final and play-off semi-final, and ultimately they’re due success.
“That’s what excites me about the club, I think it’s going places.
“There was interest from elsewhere but the project here was something that attracted me more than them.”
Although he was largely an understudy to Leif Davis – one of the division’s standout players last season – the left-sided defender is looking to replicate some of the success he enjoyed while at Portman Road.
“There’s a lot of the culture that I can bring into this team,” said Leigh.
“Knowing what we did last year to get promoted and the success that we had, I can help with bringing elements of that with me and repeat the process.”

Asked about his playing style and strengths, Leigh responded: “I’d say if you were summing me up, what people would say is pace, power, aerially, defensively and good runs forward.
“It’s interesting because people say a lot of full backs are converted wingers, but I started as a full back very early in my career so I’ve picked up the defensive side of the game.
“I started as a winger, so I’ve got elements of both and I like to work at both.
“At the end of the day, I want to win games and play well, and I know playing well means stopping the opposition but also getting forward.”
Leigh also sees similarities between the way both Ipswich and the U’s play their football.
He said: “Coming from Ipswich, it’s something that we worked on a lot, our style of play and getting the ball on the floor, and playing through the thirds.
“But also finding ways and patterns to hurt teams, and I think the gaffer here mirrors that and has shown that’s the way he wants to play.”
