COUNTY swimming clubs made a big impression at recent national competitions.

The British Summer Championships and National Summer Meet were held at Ponds Forge in Sheffield.

Abingdon Vale Swimming Club saw Ellen Bagley, 17, race in the 50m and 100m breaststroke as one of the youngest qualifiers in the women’s open category, while teammates Can Tugcetin and Kayden Sillah, also 17, competed in the men’s breaststroke for 18 and 17-year-olds respectively.

Tugcetin and Sillah secured lanes in age-group finals for all their events, with the former placing fourth twice and sixth once.

Both achieved personal best times, Tugcetin taking four seconds off his entry time in the 200m.

Bagley capped off an excellent season by finishing 14th (third-highest 18-year-old) in the 100m breaststroke.

Head coach Amanda Ford said: “Abingdon Vale remains a highly successful and progressive swimming club.

“We are athlete-centred, coach-led, and performance-focused, maintaining a long-term focus on the development of our swimmers.

“There are other programmes that are much larger than Abingdon Vale, but we continue to punch above our weight.”

Meanwhile, five swimmers from Witney & District Swimming Club qualified for both the British Championships and the National Summer Meet.

In the former event, 17-year-old Erin Stewart managed 23rd in the 100m backstroke and 14th in the 50m backstroke.

Annaliese Elford, Eleanor Perks and Maya Saldana all reached finals at the National Summer Meet.

Elford, 14, finished third in the 50m breaststroke and fifth in the 100m breaststroke, while Perks was fourth in the 200m breaststroke. Saldana, 16, was 10th in the 100m breaststroke.

Hattie Lever, 15, set a new club record in the 1,500m front crawl.
