A RUGBY league side is set for its first ever Open Age men’s fixture this weekend – almost four years after their founding.
West Oxfordshire Levellers held just two training sessions before the first Covid-19 lockdown struck, but will finally make their bow tomorrow against Swindon St George.
Club founder John Connaughton told this newspaper: “Launching the club when I did, I didn’t see Covid would be around the corner.
“It’s been a lot of work and Covid didn’t help things, so I had to restart afterwards and wanted to build from the ground up.

“We’ve had a few good training sessions coming up to the game and I just want it to go well.
“I hope it all comes together and we can put on a show so that people can spread the word.”
First team captain Alex Knight added: “This is a historic moment for the West Oxfordshire Levellers.
“The whole squad is buzzing for the opportunity to show off what we have been working on, and prove that the south of England has an appetite for rugby league.
“John has been working so hard for this moment since the club was established, and we hope we can do him proud.”
The game will be played at the playing fields off Old Witney Road in Eynsham.
Head coach Jake Morris said: “It’s been years in the making and a lot of hard work from countless people behind the scenes, but now the Levellers are ready to challenge themselves and those wearing the jersey will be proud to do so.”
