National Young Athletes League

Oxford City face an uphill battle to avoid relegation from South Division 1 West of the National Young Athletes League, after they finished last in the penultimate round at a windswept Milton Keynes.

Going into the match, City were just a point above the drop zone, so needed a good performance to move to safety, but in extremely windy conditions, it was not to be.

The under 17 girls bucked the trend of the rest as they picked up 15 first places out of the 19 events they filled.

Rebecca Hussey had wins on the track in the 200m (26.0secs) and B string 80m hurdles (13.7), before a personal best in the shot of 6.18.

Kirsty Warland won the A string 80m hurdles and 300m hurdles in times of 11.5 and 48.1 respectively, and followed this up with a personal best of 13.44 in the B string javelin.

Danielle Anderson won the A string javelin (31.32), the shot (6.48) and long jump (4.39).

Another star was Melissa Hawtin, who had a hat-trick of wins in the 800m (2.25.6), 300m (46.0) and discus (15.71).

The under 15 girls had a mixed afternoon.

Emily Moore had a personal best of 5.14m to win the A string long jump, and took first in the B string high jump (1.45).

There was a first-place finish in the under 13 girls' age group, Imogen van Zyl clocking 2mins 38secs in the 800m.

The only joy for the under 17 men came from Tom Foxon in the long jump (5.52m) and triple jump (11.42).

Their afternoon was summed up when they dropped the baton in the 4x100m relay.

The under 15 boys amassed 15 personal bests, with debutant Dominic Bambrook-Taylor showing encouraging signs.

He won the B string discus with 17.55m, while Mark Warland took the A string event with 21.70.

The under 13 boys had double wins in the 100m, with Matthew Gain clocking 13.8 in the A string and Tom Stockford 14.2 in the B string.

Doubles also came in the long jump, Stockford leaping 3.94m and Josh Tack 3.79.

City must win their last meeting on July 20 at Bournemouth to stand a chance of avoiding the drop.

Result: 1 Milton Keynes 389, 2 Wycombe 384, 3 Hillingdon 355, 4 Oxford City 295.
