FORMER Oxford United captain Curtis Nelson has joined Derby County.

The 30-year-old centre back left Sky Bet Championship side Cardiff City by mutual consent in January, going on to join Blackpool on a deal until the end of the season.

He made 18 appearances for the Seasiders, scoring once in a 6-1 win against Queens Park Rangers, but was unable to preserve the Lancashire side’s second tier status.

Nelson joins United’s League One rivals Derby on a two-year deal.

He told Rams TV: “I’m really happy to be here now and get it done.

“I met the manager [Paul Warne] at the start of the summer and I’m just really happy to be here, and to get started.

“I know a few of the lads that are here and a few lads that have played for the manager, and everything they said was very positive.

“I think there’s a massive opportunity to get the club back to where it once was.”

Nelson made 121 appearances for the U’s, scoring eight goals during a three-year spell with the club.
