OXFORD United will begin the season away for the seventh consecutive year as Liam Manning’s side make the trip to Cambridge United on the opening day.

The two sides met on the first day of the season two years ago, with Steve Seddon netting in a 1-1 draw.

This campaign’s fixture – on August 5 – will offer an immediate reunion for goalkeeper Jack Stevens, whose move to Mark Bonner’s team on an initial free transfer was announced yesterday.

The U’s then come up against Sky Bet League Two play-off winners Carlisle United in their first home game of the 2023/24 campaign, on August 12.

The first league clash with nearby rivals Reading since 2001 is pencilled in for October 14 (away), with United to welcome the Royals on February 3.

The trip to the Madejski Stadium does however fall on an international date, so it is possible that game could be rearranged.

United face a double-header at home over Christmas, with Cambridge coming to Grenoble Road on Boxing Day, while Derby County make the trip on Friday, December 29, before the U’s then visit Charlton Athletic on New Year’s Day.

Manning’s team will spend Good Friday (March 29) at Shrewsbury Town and Easter Monday (April 1) at home to Fleetwood Town.

The U’s end the season away to Exeter City on April 27, while the final home game of the season will be against promoted Stevenage on April 20.

Not since a 1-1 draw at home to Chesterfield in the 2016/17 season have United started the campaign at home.

There has since been a 2-0 win at Oldham Athletic in 2017, defeats to Barnsley (4-0 in 2018), Lincoln City (2-0 in 2020) and Derby (1-0 in 2022), plus 1-1 draws with Sunderland (2019) and Cambridge (2021).
