Oxford United are understood to be chasing former Blackpool, Plymouth and MK Dons striker Scott Taylor.
The 32-year-old, who has played at Championship level in the past, is believed to be weighing up whether to stay as a full-time player by joining Oxford United or accept a part-time offer from Blue Square Premier new boys Lewes.
Taylor, who earlier in his career moved to Tranmere for £350,000, was loaned out by MK Dons to Grays Athletic for the second half of last season.
He played in the 0-0 draw with Oxford United at the Kassam Stadium on January 26 when he almost broke the deadlock two minutes from time by getting around the back of the U's defence, only to be halted by a brilliant last-ditch challenge from Luke Foster and save by Billy Turley.
Throughout his career, though, he has scored goals, finding the net 82 times in around 270 league starts.
Lewes's new manager, Kevin Keehan, said:told the Brighton Argus newspaper: "I have had a couple of chats with Scott.
"He was at Blackpool and Plymouth, where he suffered a broken leg. He is a goalscorer, which is what we want.
"It looks like he will get an offer from Oxford United to stay full-time and he must decide whether he wants to be full-time or part-time."
Taylor started his professional career at Millwall, where he played 28 games before being signed by Bolton for £150,000 in March 1996.
He failed to break into Bolton's side, though, and after loan spells at Rotherham and Blackpool, signed for Tranmere in October 1998 for a fee of £350,000.
After playing more than 100 games for Tranmere in almost three years, he joined Stockport on a free transfer.
Following a short spell at Edgley Park, he moved to Blackpool, and it was there that he enjoyed the most successful part of his career, scoring 61 goals in a two- year spell.
That impressive record resulted in a transfer to Championship side Plymouth Argyle.
He moved to MK Dons in January 2006 and made around 50 appearances, a lot of them as a substitute, with loans to Brentford and Rochdale.
The Chertsey-born forward struck a hat-trick on his third appearance for Grays, in their 3-1 fourth-round Setanta Shield win at Welling United, and also hit three goals in 11 starts for the Essex side in the Blue Square Premier.
United manager Darren Patterson says there are a number of players he is chasing, but news on them is unlikely to materialise for up to two weeks.
But he stressed possible signings were "creeping ever closer".
Patterson has urged fans to be patient and says it is because he has been targeting Football League players that deals - if they go through - will be concluded later rather than sooner.
"I've been working very hard to get the players in that we want, and I've had to be very patient, but the possibilities of getting them are creeping ever closer.
"The signings, though, are likely to be just before we come back or even just after we come back as these players are coming back from holiday and some are not back until July 1.
"Hopefully, in ten days to two weeks we should have some positive news to give to people, but I'm quite OK about that, everything's going to plan."
United's players are reporting back for pre-season earlier than ever before, on June 23, but that is partly because the last Blue Square Premier season finished so early, at the end of April.
The Coca-Cola League, in contrast, went into May, and many players didn't go on holiday until June.
