JAMES Golding has agreed a new contract with Oxford United almost a year after putting pen to paper on his first professional deal with the club.

That contract, announced on March 23 last year, was due to expire in the summer.

The new deal extends Golding’s stay with the U’s for a further year.

The 18-year-old defender has made eight appearances for the club after making his debut against Tottenham Hotspur Under-21s in the Papa John’s Trophy back in October 2021.

Golding told the United website: “I’m really happy about the new deal. I have felt at home ever since I first signed here as a scholar and it’s great to know that the new gaffer and the club have that faith in me.

“It has been a little frustrating not to play more this season, a couple of injuries haven’t helped but I’m back in training and feeling good.”

Golding has also been called up to the Republic of Ireland Under-19 squad for their UEFA European Under-19 Championship games at home to Slovakia, Estonia and Greece later this month.

“It’s always nice to get away with Ireland, I enjoy that and it’s fantastic experience so I’m looking forward to that,” said Golding.

“The new deal means I get the chance to finish this season strongly then do what I always do: work hard, keep striving to improve and then come back in pre-season ready to really kick on.”
