Caretaker manager Craig Short admitted he will “try things differently” in tomorrow’s game against Lincoln City.
The U’s face Lincoln in their first game in the post Karl Robinson era and are looking to turn around their poor run of form.
Craig Short, Leon Blackmore-Such and Wayne Brown have been placed in charge whilst the club search for a new manager and will oversee this weekend’s game, at least.
Robinson said goodbye to the players on Monday morning with Short admitting it was a “difficult moment” for him after five years at the club.
The news of his dismissal came after a 3-0 defeat to Bristol Rovers, a seventh defeat in eight games.
Short said: “Karl built up relationships and friendships and was a fourth longest manager in the EFL so it was a difficult moment with him.
“We do reflect, and I said to everyone, me included as well as his assistant for three years, we have played a part in someone getting the sack and its not a nice moment.
“We know this is a ruthless industry, strange things to happen, but we have now a responsibility to the club.”
Focussing on his time as the number two, Short said that him and Robinson would have disagreements over certain decisions but would never hold grudges.
He said: “Me and Karl would disagree on things.
“I always said to Karl if we did disagree you would never hold grudges.
“You would come in the next day and we’ll get on with it.
“So, yeah, I’d disagree with Karl, over periods of time, or on certain decisions,
“But he’s the manager, the pressure is on him.
“He’s the guy who’s got to respond to the fans and - the media, not me.
“As number two, you’re very, very comfortable, you can hide away and give as much support as you possibly can.
“But he wanted me to challenge him at times, and most of the time I got it wrong!”
Short revealed that he will make some adjustments this weekend as United look for their first victory since January 21, a 2-1 win over Ipswich Town.
He said: “We’ll try things differently of course, but those players who’ve been playing, haven’t been performing at the level they should be, and that’s the bottom line.
“I have brought in a few new ideas and tried to implement a few things I want to do, it’s not massive changes.
“The game is very simple, we are talking about League One.
“Its very physical and intense. You look at the product in the Premier League, it’s very different.
“I have always been a coach who demanded you are better with your duals and I was the same as a player.
“I want more from them out of possession and we haven’t been great in possession recently either.
“I know Karl’s team, whilst I have been here, have dominated possession and look very exciting side but we have to be harder to beat.
“I have always been sympathetic to defenders, me and Karl used to fall out about it a lot.
“I wanted our defenders to have more protection but Karl wanted to play a way of attacking footballer.”
