Adam Wootton said winning the Grand Challenge Cup at Royal St George's ranked as his best performance yet.

The 20-year-old Oxford City member played some superb golf to land the title whose former winners include Jack Nicklaus.

Wootton also finished tied-second in the Prince of Wales Challenge Cup at Royal Cinque Ports the previous day, which meant he was also the overall champion by six shots.

He shot rounds of 72 and 71 at Cinque Ports and 71 and 69 at Sandwich.

Wootton said: "It was my first national win and so is my biggest yet "I have been playing really well, so I was quite confident going into the first day.

"I also got a little trophy for winning the 72-hole title, which was a bonus.

"When I played St George's on the Sunday, I holed a lot of good putts and put myself on the fairways."

Wootton, who plays off plus three, works as a carpenter for Beard Construction, but would eventually like to turn professional.

"My company have been really good this year in letting me have a lot of time off for golf," said Wootton.

"I was planning to go to European Tour school in October, but I think I will stay amateur next year and try to win a few bigger tournaments.

"Hopefully I will be a pro by the time the Open is back at Royal St George's in 2011."
