Former Oxford United skipper Phil Gilchrist will come up against the U's next season after agreeing to become assistant to head coach Kim Grant at Conference rivals Woking.
Ex-Charlton and Ghana striker Grant, 35, was appointed by the Cards last week and has made Gilchrist, 34, his No 2.
The two have been on the same UEFA B coaching course at Keele University, which ends this week.
Grant said: "I had several possible candidates in mind for the assistant coach role, including some from abroad.
"But I decided that Phil, with his top-flight experience as a defender, his stint as club captain at Oxford United and his time at the Leicester Academy, fitted the bill best.
"Phil, like me, is very ambitious, wants to get into management himself and is determined to succeed."
