JORDAN Flynn has reiterated his ambition to become a world champion ahead of his historic Kassam Stadium fight this weekend.

Professional boxing hasn’t taken place in Oxford for 60 years, with a host of local fighters set to feature on Saturday.

Among them is unbeaten lightweight Flynn, who boasts a 6-0 record since turning professional.

The Grenoble Road bout will be extra special for Flynn, who grew up in Cowley and now lives in Greater Leys.

Looking ahead to his latest fight, Flynn said becoming a world champion remained his goal after seeing one of his friends become one.

In June, Welshman Joe Cordina claimed the IBF super-featherweight title.

Flynn said: “I’m feeling great. I’ve been working hard, it’s been a hard camp in Essex, where I train.

“I’m ready for whatever comes, I’m sparring four-minute rounds and its been world-class sparring.

“My main aim is to become a world champion so right now it’s about getting as many fights in as possible.

“I want to go for a title early next year, I should be highly ranked by then.

“Hopefully I’ll have got another fight before the end of the year, in either late November or early December, so that’ll take me to five fights for the year and set me up nicely.”

The weekend’s fight is so close to home for Flynn, that he’d be able to walk to the stadium.

“It’s giving everyone the chance to come, it’s going to be a sell-out,” he said.

“It’s always been a dream of mine to fight in Oxford, and for it to happen so soon is a dream come true.

“It’s a privilege to be the main event and inspire other young fighters.”

Flynn is joined on the card by fellow Oxford boxers Tom Brennan and Ciaran Flanagan, plus Bradley Townsend, a super-lightweight from Witney, who boasts a 10-0 record.

With 700 people expected at the Kassam, promoter Mark Neilson revealed there are plans to host further events in the city.

He said: “The venue is sold out, there are no more tickets on sale.

“We certainly need a bigger venue as we could have sold out this venue four or five times over and added another half a dozen boxers to the card.

“Jordan Flynn tops the bill. Jordan is 6-0, he’s a really exciting fighter and could have sold out the venue on his own.

“Bradley Townsend is also on the card, he’s 10-0 and he’ll be in an eight-round contest before looking towards some title fights next.

“Ciaran Flanagan is coming off of a disappointing debut loss, he is trying to put that behind him as he boxes in front of a home crowd.”

The last professional show to be held in Oxford was in 1962 when former Commonwealth champion Percy Lewis boxed in his penultimate bout before retirement.
