An Oxford United supporters team are doing their bit for fostering links between clubs in different countries by playing against fans team in Belgium this weekend.

The United team, managed by one of their players, John Matthews, are taking on the fans of Union Royale Namur FC, a second division Belgian club, at their training ground at 2pm tomorrow.

Oxford United's side (Raging Fever) play in the Independent Fans Association League.

The league has been set up to improve relationships between fans, and teams contact each other through a webgroup and arrange league games - normally when their respective professional sides are due to meet.

The focus of the league is primarily to enjoy the football and strengthen ties between fans in a competitive yet friendly spirit.

And now the ethos has extended to international links.

Recently, for example, the Liverpool IFA team played Inter Milan fans prior to the Champions League quarter-final tie in Milan, and spookily won 1-0 as did their professional team.

The Oxford fans team have been invited to play Union Royale Namur supporters with several of the Belgian club's fans team having adopted Oxford United as their favoured English side.

Their supporters recently played Dulwich Hamlet, another IFA team, and asked if Oxford had a fans team.

Matthews said: "The strength of the network has been proven by this fixture this Saturday.

"After the match, the Oxford fans will attend the evening fixture when Namur entertain Lommel in the Belgian second division - and then a night out to really forge the links between fans is then planned!

"We'll be inviting the Namur fans back over next season to reciprocate," he added.
