Absent fans in Abingdon United's lowest crowd for two years missed a goalscoring masterclass from Luke Holden, who scored a four-timer at Northcourt Road on Saturday.

Holden's purple patch against in their 5-0 win over Taunton Town helped Abingdon to their biggest victory since being promoted to BGB Southern League Division 1 South & West.

Taunton started strongly with Scott Thomas testing Abingdon keeper Lee Farrow early on.

After Daniel Meade thundered a shot against the bar, the same player sprinted down the wing to set up the first goal, which Holden turned over the line from six yards.

On the half-hour, a well-judged chip from Billy Beechers found Holden, who lobbed perfectly over keeper Nathan Whatley.

Taunton rallied at the start of the second period and Tom Collett lobbed wide when well-paced.

They followed up with a succession of corners which finished with Dean Moss, on his 301st appearance for Abingdon, stooping to head off the line with.

By attacking, Taunton left holes at the back, and on the hour, James Organ set Holden on a 30-yard run.

A despairing tackle arrived too late as Holden slipped it past Whatley for his hat-trick.

Meade compounded Town's situation within two minutes as he sprinted away down the right, and after some good interpassing, drilled a low shot into the far bottom corner.

Abingdon's final goal came in the 78th minute when the pacy Beechers broke down the left.

As he drew the defence, Beechers slipped it across the six-yard box for the waiting Holden to smash it into the back of the net.

Only a superb tackle from John Lock prevented Beechers adding a sixth.
