The top-of-the-bill clash between Berinsfield's Simon Welsh and Lydney's England international Chris Higgs lived up to all its expectations at the Rover Club in Cowley.

The Gloucestershire man was intent on avenging a previous defeat and demonstrated his intentions quickly by upending Welsh with a looping left just seconds after the bell.

Four intense rounds saw the pair trying to get the better of one another like two chess grand masters trying to make that decisive move.

Higgs had the edge, but another rematch seems a mouth-watering prospect.

But Ian Jenkins provided a home victory in the night's other four-round clash as he proved quicker to the punch than Waterlooville's Ryan Moore.

Roxroy Eccleston needed less than three minutes to see off the challenge of Oxford University's Dan Hudson.

An overhand right prompted a count as the opener drew to a close and a left-right combination prompted a second inspection of referee Steve Graham's fingers shortly after hostilities resumed.

When Hudson was stunned by another crisp right hand the end was signalled.

And a Berinsfield double was achieved over Varsity opposition in the final bout as Dan Norris imposed a count from a solid right over southpaw Reggie Briggs during the middle round on his way to a clear points win.

Christy McDonagh secured the first success of the night for the host gym, imposing a count from a six-punch in the final session as he outpointed Milton Keynes rival Sam Griffiths.

Will Joyce proved too slick for Cleeve's Lee Kennedy, whose frustration got the better of him and led to his disqualification midway through the clash for constantly holding.
