AS we enter the final week of the transfer window, Oxford United are not ready to stick with what they have just yet.

The injuries have added a layer of uncertainty to what exactly will happen between now and 11pm on Thursday, but the noises from the club suggest they intend to do more business.

Karl Robinson has said he will avoid short-term fixes despite the busy treatment room, so it is worth reflecting on where he wanted to strengthen in early July.

After revealing a bid had been accepted for a player – Stuart Findlay – the United head coach told us he was after a striker, three wingers and a holding midfielder.

He has since stated that he also wants a right back, the only position of those listed above that has not been filled. There are a couple of caveats to that, though.

The three new wingers - Yanic Wildschut, Josh Murphy and Jodi Jones - are either injured or out of favour, while Lewis Bate is not a specialist holding midfielder.

After signing the Leeds United loanee, Robinson suggested he was happy with his options in that area and Marcus McGuane now appears to be first-choice in the deeper role.

It all points to right back as the priority position, with West Bromwich Albion teenager Ethan Ingram linked recently.

Meanwhile, rumours have been circling about a return for Gavin Whyte following reports that Cardiff City are open to the winger leaving before deadline day.

The U's are understood to have shown an interest in the 26-year-old this summer, although it will be interesting to see if a hat-trick for the Sky Bet Championship outfit's Under 21s on Tuesday earns him a recall tomorrow.

United would surely be near the front of the queue to sign Whyte, who has spoken several times of his affection for the club.

Yesterday, Robinson referred to the ever-changing landscape of the transfer window, so players who are not available now could be in a different situation come next week.

It suggests there are several twists and turns to come as we build up to deadline day.
