KARL Robinson says Oxford United still need a new right back – despite the impressive performances of teenager James Golding.

The 18-year-old caught the eye in the Carabao Cup ties against Swansea City and Crystal Palace.

Golding filled in at right back for the first-round win over the south Wales side, before playing right wing back in Tuesday’s defeat to the Eagles.

Robinson praised the youngster's displays but insists he still wants to bring in cover for Sam Long before the transfer window closes a week today.

The U’s head coach said: “I think we still need to recruit in that position, we’re not going away from that.

“I said I was excited to see him in that position (before the Swansea game) and he didn’t let me down. On Tuesday, I thought he was excellent.

“The young players stood up and were counted.”

United still want to do more business before the window shuts at 11pm next Thursday, having made eight signings so far.

Eight first-team players missed the defeat to Palace, though, so the need for new faces is as great as ever.

The final seven days of the transfer window could be a waiting game and Robinson knows there are some big calls to make.

He said: “I need the players now, but I haven’t got them.

“Do you wait until after Saturday, and because of the constant movement of players one might become available who we didn’t think was available. Again, it’s about when do you twist?

“That’s something the recruitment team are working around the clock on and I back them to make the right decisions.”
