REFEREES should be allowed to explain key decisions to the media after matches, says Karl Robinson.

The Oxford United head coach felt Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta should have been sent off for an apparent elbow on John Mousinho during the first half of last night's Carabao Cup tie.

The Eagles forward was already on a yellow card for a late challenge on the U’s captain ten minutes earlier.

Robinson was surprised the incident was missed by Peter Bankes, who has refereed in the Premier League since 2019.

And the U’s boss feels giving officials the chance to share their thoughts on key talking points would be beneficial.

He said: “We’re in a billion-pound industry. Why can’t they have a press officer at the top level of our game that you can ask three questions to, that’s all.

“You should be able to ask those questions of a referee in a calm manner and ask for clarity in his decision-making.

“I think managers would get more of a reprieve from owners and fans if we know the referee’s holding his hands up.

“Referees are great people - they understand the game and when they make mistakes they’re honest about that as well.

“I think it would make them seem less robotic. If you respect them with your questions, I think they should be able to come forward. If you do it with respect, they’ll gain more respect.

“I think they’re frightened about how deep you can go, but if questions are asked about the three key incidents in the game they should be able to watch it back and say ‘I got that wrong’.”
